Archimedes Meets Shakespeare

Archimedes is probably the coolest guy in all of history. I mean, the guy invented the cuckoo clock, the odometer, and a semi-modern irrigation system, ALL BEFORE 200 B.C.E.! He was a mathematician, a physicist, and an architect at the same time, and basically defended tiny little Syracuse, Sicily from the entire Roman navy using his own Grecian noggin. And Shakespeare, well, he's pretty cool too, and I'm an English teacher. Read Hamlet.

Finally, an update!

Well well, I knew this would happen. I'd post twice within a week of creating my blog, and then not post for months. Self-fulfilling prophecies are amazing, aren't they?

In the meantime, I've started teaching 7th and 8th grade English (we call it Language Arts nowadays) at Tucson Country Day School. It's fantastic: the students are hard-working (mostly) and enthusiastic (on Friday afternoons). But seriously, I love my job, and school days feel like they fly by. It's the outside-of-school time that the work intensifies. But during class, I've mostly given the students discussion topics about the books we're reading, and let them go. They've done a great job, too. I've had to regulate from time to time, but they are able to bounce ideas off one another with surprising effectiveness. Now I need to start drilling them on the difference between there, their, and they're, and also "would have" instead of "would of" and "have to" instead of "half to." Sometimes, this can be frustrating.

In other news, the Mets are division champions!!!!! I'm looking for somewhere to go to watch the games, and hoping that there are some Mets fans around Tucson. We'll see if I can find any.

By the way, it's still 90 degrees here during the day :-)
