Victory!
The basketball season is off to a smashing start! We dropped our first game of the season (and my career) to The Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (amidst many a joke from Tim). None of them were blind, obviously, but they were all deaf, including the two coaches. It was really interesting to watch them in the huddle, signing to each other, and out on the court, calling out the plays. Although, to be honest, once the game was going, it was all basketball, and there was really no difference. They had this one kid score 14 points on the way to a 23-18 game. Although another kid hit a miracle 3-pointer, so we were really in the game the whole time.
After that, though, we went on to a smashing defeat of Southgate Academy, 28-12, in which nine of my 15 players (I know, fifteen!) scored. We were down two point guards, because one was suspended and academically ineligible (in 5th grade!?), and the other had to go to a hockey game with his mom (ah, now that's 5th grade). But we played hard and squashed 'em.
Our third game, tonight, was against Fountain of Life Charter School. We fell behind 6-2 early, but clawed our way back with strong rebounding and with our new Box-and-1 defense. FOL had one kid who was clearly better than the rest (7 of their 8 halftime points), so I manned up my best defender on him in the second half, and we came back in the 4th quarter to win, 15-14! (That same player had all 4 second half points, too, but he only had 4 this time).
My kids played so well, I was so proud. I wonder though, about the parents. Everyone on the team played in the game, but some only played 4 minutes (we play 8 minute quarters.) It was close, and the kids want to win, so that's what I did. Everyone on the bench was cheering and totally into the game, too. Hopefully there are no complaints, but, as you know, this is education, and there are bound to be some. I'm just real pleased with how things are going on the team, and I hope nothing dramatic happens.
Our next game is Thursday against River of Life Charter School. Yeah, we have a lot of faith-based schools in the league. Wish us luck!
